Hello! This is our submission for the OST Composing Jam 8. We are a team of two people, and we have prepared 7 tracks for you to enjoy.
We used FL Studio to compose the tracks that have a total runtime of [----].
Our process consisted of much planning in advance and exchanging ideas, since both of us had limited time to work on the Jam. We also composed all of the 7 tracks virtually simultaneously, so that we could compare each track to the others and try not to be too repeating with our style.
Speaking of style, ours is a bit mixed this time around. It ranges from slower, orhcestral songs to sea shanty-esque accordion melodies (with all of them having recurring themes across the board, don't worry).
We were inspired by both the image and word prompt (and Norwegian folklore) and we came up witheh (a rough draft of) the following story:
There is a young woman, whose grandfather is a lighthouse keeper in a small Norwegian coastal town. When she was a little girl, her and her family went to the village for summer vacation, and every year, on One specific Summer Night (he said the thing!!!!) , she waited on the town's pier for her grandfather's signal - he always signed "GOODNIGHT" to her in morse code with the help of the lamp in the lighthouse.
As she grows older, she goes there less and less, and as of today, she hasn't gone in a good while, as she now leads a fairly nice life in the city.
One day, though, after remembering the time spent at the village and recalling the lighthouse signal her grandfather used to do for her, she decides to return to it. On that One Summer Night (he said the thing AGAIN!!!!) where she's back and awaits her grandfather's signal, she stands on the pier and waits. And waits. But nothing. The lighthouse shines as usual, but the signal is nowhere to be seen.
That is what happens in the first track. We chose a classical approach to this track, as it works well in connection with "memories" and the calmness of the sea next to the village. The long notes at the end of this track represent the young woman waiting for the signal, but to no avail.
Knowing that her gramps hasn't died yet, she heads to the lighthouse to look for answers. But all she finds is another person, who doesn't know of her grandfather's whereabouts, and also doesn't really enjoy her company.
In spite of that, she looks for any clues within the lighthouse that may help with finding her grandfather. Indeed she does find two things: a stone-shaped hole in the wall next to the lower control panels of the light, and documents that talk about...
a Gemstone of Eternal Light?
To be found in a chest with two keyholes?
Somewhere in the sea?
Her grandfather must have embarked on a journey to retrieve this Eternal Light!
He must have gone on a search for these two keys! And he knows where they are, apparently. The documents mention a horde of dolphins (in the Norwegian sea???) and an undead Pirate who is also looking for the keys?!
The second track conveys this. Here, we went a bit more playful with the flutes in the melody and the slow swing rhythm as means of depicting her sneaking around. We added frequent tempo increases, since the young woman's excitement and adrenaline is constantly rising due to all the new findings (documents and gemstone hole).
The young woman embarks on the same journey as her grandfather and quickly finds the dolphins. They ask for guidance through polluted and poisonous water to reach the vaster ocean. As a reward, she receives one of the two keys - or at least, she should have.
We used dolphin sounds in the third track for the rhythm. We also went with a more cheerful melody and instrumental here to convey the excitement the young woman has for the journey. At the beginning of the track, the dolphins can be heard "asking for help".
The only thing she finds is her dead grandfather, with a saber in his right hand.
The Pirate got there first.
She must hurry.
The fourth track, a short one, is her discovering the death of her gramps. The rhythm at the start of the song spells out "DEATH" in Norwegian. During that scene, she clamors and becomes enraged at the pirate, depicted by the melancholic piano melody and minor chords.
After a fortunately short trip, the young woman finally reaches the location of the chest. A partially submerged cave, where she sees the Pirate docking his ship, about to get access to the chest. She grabs his attention and demands he give her the keys. The Pirate obviously scoffs, wondering what this random lady would want from him. You killed my grandfather, she exclaims.
Upon hearing those words, he turns serious and challenges her to a duel, so that the young woman "can meet the same fate as the one who came before her".
After an arduous fight, she slays and banishes the pirate to a permanent grave.
This is where the actual duel starts. There is a rhythm change in the middle of song to signify the duel picking up intensity.
With the two new keys, she gets access to the Gemstone, and rushes to the lighthouse. She sticks the Gemstone in that hole next to the control panels, and it lights up, welding itself into the control panel. She doesn't exactly know what happened, but the Gemstone is back where it needed to be, and the young woman is happy, knowing that her mission wasn't in vain.
Here we are at the end of the adventure. This 6th track is triumphant and sorrowful at the same time, as the mission has been completed, but the grandfather's still dead.
A year later, the young woman is back at the village, as she realized how much she cherished her time here as a kid, in addition to remembering the wild adventure she had a year prior. Once more, she stood on the pier on the One Summer Night (third time's the charm!!!!!), and this time, she finally sees the light flicker:
G-O-D-N-A-T-T.
The 7th and final track is a variation of the first, since it is the same situation, just a year later. At the end, you can also hear the Norwegian word for "GOODNIGHT" in morse code - the signal is back.
